BS Biotechnology
(Bachelor of Sciences in Biotechnology)
Biotechnology has emerged as a revolutionary discipline, which has the potential to galvanize and broaden the base of industrial structures in developing countries and to discover new directions in agriculture, environment, health, industry and energy. There are clear indications that this new technology will have a significant role in the future economic growth of developing countries. BS-Biotechnology program is designed to serve those students interested in pursuing a career in research science or higher academic degrees. This is an ideal preparatory tool for students planning to go to graduate school or other professional degree program, or those students interested in pursuing a career as a research associate. This program also provides students with scientific background and laboratory experience necessary for employment with Biotech and pharmaceutical industries, for advanced studies in applications of Biotechnology such as Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. Students will be well-trained to compete for employment in major pharmaceutical or industrial laboratories, governmental laboratories, university teaching and research, not-for-profit research institutions and will be competitive for academic placement in graduate degree programs.
The BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY FACTS
There are more than 370 drug products and vaccines currently in clinical trials targeting more than 200 diseases, including various cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, AIDS and arthritis.
DNA fingerprinting, a Biotech process, has dramatically improved criminal investigation and forensic medicine, as well as afforded significant advances in anthropology and wildlife management.
Biotechnology is responsible for hundreds of medical diagnostic tests that keep the blood supply safe from AIDS virus and detect other conditions early enough to be successfully treated. Home pregnancy tests are also Biotechnology diagnostic products.
Environmental Biotechnology products make it possible to clean up hazardous waste more efficiently by harnessing pollution-eating microbes without the use of caustic chemicals.
Industrial Biotechnology applications have led to cleaner processes that produce less waste and use less energy and water in such industrial sectors as chemicals, pulp and paper, textiles, food, energy, and metals and minerals. For example, most laundry detergents produced in the United States contain biotechnology-based enzymes.
Consumers already are enjoying Biotechnological foods (Genetically modified food) such as papaya, soybeans and maize. Hundreds of biopesticides and other agricultural products also are being used to improve our food supply and to reduce our dependence on conventional chemical pesticides.
Biotechnology is one of the most research-intensive industries in the world. The U.S. Biotech industry spent $20.5 billion on research and development in 2002.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Intermediate Science (Pre-medical) with at-least second division, or equivalent certificate from recognized institutions. Candidates need to pass an Entry Test and appear in interview conducted by the University.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE:
Biotechnology is a highly inter-disciplinary field requiring knowledge of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Molecular Genetics, Genetic Engineering and a number of other related disciplines. Teaching and research in the field of Bio-technology needs be strengthened due to its immense value. This objective can only be achieved by producing well-trained scientific manpower in the country. The syllabus of our BS Biotech has thus been designed through integration of the related fields with an aim to keep our students abreast with the latest developments and technologies in the domain. This design of this degree Program is aimed at promoting students with skill and knowledge of a rapidly advancing and challenging field that has a great demand in Pakistan and abroad.
